Why Preventive Dental Care is So Important

Posted · Add Comment

Preventive dental care is important and by far the easiest way to maintain the best oral health. Preventive dental care can help each member of your family keep a healthy and beautiful smile by protecting against dental decay, periodontal disease, and gum disease. Our approach to a healthy smile here at Dr. Angie Rhodes’ office starts with routine dental cleanings, regular checkups, fluoride treatments and digital X-rays.

Routine Dental Cleanings

While you might just think professional cleanings are just to make sure you are brushing and flossing daily, they are much much more than that. Routine dental cleanings often begin with X-rays to determine if there are signs of disease or decay. One of our dental hygienists will ensure you are comfortable while using special instruments to remove plaque buildup and calcified tartar between the teeth and gums. The hygienist then will polish your teeth to remove surface stains, leaving your teeth clean and shiny. We recommend that patients have their teeth cleaned every six months; however, more frequent cleanings may be necessary if you exhibit signs of periodontal disease.

Regular Checkups

Regular checkups following professional cleaning are key to sustaining your dental health. While you may not feel or see any problems, these examinations are important to check for any potential problems. Your regular checkups are also a perfect time to ask Dr. Rhodes any questions regarding your oral health.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride treatments make it difficult for plaque, sugars, and bacteria to damage your teeth. Fluoride is painless and can be done in just minutes. After a fluoride treatment, you will be asked to avoid eating or drinking anything for 30 minutes to let your teeth absorb the fluoride.

Digital X-Rays

Our office uses digital imaging technology because it is fast, easy and comfortable for our patients. The digital x-rays enable Dr. Rhodes to make informed decisions and provide the most effective treatment. While you might think that a digital x-ray is a waste of time, early diagnosis can save you money in the long run so existing problems don’t become more serious.
